Plot summary
Monterey, California, in the 1940s. Cannery Row, the stretch of town where the fish canneries have shut down, is home to people who have run out of luck and stay on regardless. Doc, a marine biologist, lives in a dockside warehouse, gathers marine specimens to sell for research and keeps a collection of eight baby octopuses that he hopes will define his future work. Suzy DeSoto arrives from elsewhere, short on job skills, and takes work at the local bordello, where her headstrong manner does not fit the job. Doc and Suzy like each other at once, but their personalities collide, and Doc is still carrying a past he wants to make amends for. Neighbors on the Row try to nudge the two together.
