Did you know?!

  1. A first

Eccleston was the first actor born after Doctor Who debuted in 1963 to play the lead role, and he used his natural Northern accent instead of the RP his predecessors used, aiming to break the link between the Doctor's intellect and his accent.

  2. First role

Phyllida Lloyd, a theater director who had seen Eccleston at Central, cast him as Pablo Gonzalez in A Streetcar Named Desire at the Bristol Old Vic in 1989. It was his professional stage debut.

  3. A role that slipped away

Eccleston turned down a role in Billy Elliot because he believed it was an offensive depiction of northern English life, and he also turned down a part in Saving Private Ryan.

  4. Early training

Eccleston trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama from 1983 to 1986. While he was a student there, he also had a job as an usher at the National Theatre.

  5. A role that slipped away

Eccleston declined to return as the Ninth Doctor for the 50th anniversary special after talks with executive producer Steven Moffat, feeling the script did not do justice to the character, so John Hurt was cast as the War Doctor.

  6. A change of course

In 1989, Eccleston became part of the stage crew at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre. A theater-in-education team needed a driver, but he could not drive, so he got half-wages of 70 pounds a week and an Equity card.
