Plot summary
In 1950s England, Derek Bentley is a young man with epilepsy, illiteracy and developmental disabilities. He is drawn into a circle of petty criminals led by Christopher Craig, a younger teenager who is fond of American gangster films. Craig encourages Bentley to join a robbery at a warehouse in Croydon. Police officers arrive and the two become trapped inside the building. The officers call on Craig to put down the gun he is carrying. Bentley has already been arrested by that time. He shouts "Let him have it, Chris," and it is unclear what he means by them.

The film's end titles state that Bentley's sister was still fighting for his pardon. Seven years after the film was made, and one year after her death, his conviction was overturned by the Court of Appeal on 30 July 1998.
