Plot summary
In 1945, Grace Stewart lives in a remote country house on Jersey with her children, Anne and Nicholas. Both are severely sensitive to light, so the home stays darkened with heavy curtains drawn. Three people come asking for work: Mrs. Bertha Mills, Edmund Tuttle, and a mute maid named Lydia. Grace takes them on, and they mention having served in the house years before. Anne speaks of a boy named Victor who visits her, along with his parents and an elderly blind woman. Grace treats the tale as a child's invention.
