Plot summary
Odin's father Bor wages war on the Dark Elf Malekith, who means to loose the Aether upon the Nine Realms. Bor's army beats the Dark Elves on their homeworld of Svartalfheim and hides the Aether on a world beyond reach, while Malekith slips away with a handful of followers and sleeps. On Asgard, Odin has Loki locked up, and Thor and his companions put down marauders on Vanaheim as the Nine Realms settle after the Bifröst is rebuilt. A rare alignment of the realms called the Convergence nears, and doorways between worlds open at random. In London, the astrophysicist Jane Foster goes to an abandoned factory where one has appeared, is carried to the hidden world, and the Aether passes into her. Thor finds her and carries her home to Asgard, where Odin says the Aether will kill her.

- An early version of the film planned to feature Hela as the antagonist, but Marvel Studios producer Craig Kyle explained that Marvel Entertainment's Creative Committee did not want a female villain because they did not believe they could sell toys based on her to young boys.
- An earlier version of the film, planned by Patty Jenkins, was built on the premise of Romeo and Juliet, with Jane stuck on Earth and Thor forbidden to come and save her.

Loki was originally intended to die in the film, but after test audiences did not believe he was actually dead, Marvel Studios decided to alter the character's ending.- It is not Natalie Portman on screen in the post-credits kissing scene: Hemsworth's wife Elsa Pataky stood in for Portman there, because of a scheduling conflict.
- The Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon "basically got airlifted in, like a SWAT team" to rewrite a major scene that was not working on the page in London, and was grabbed before he got back to his plane to rewrite two more scenes.
- For the shot of the levitating truck, filmmakers attached a cement truck to a large hydraulic rig which could be programmed to change speed and movement.
