Plot summary
Leyna is a teenager in Nazi Germany. She lives with Kerstin, her mother, and Koen, her younger half-brother. Kerstin is hounded for a relationship with an African man that the regime outlawed, and Leyna for being its child. To leave the Gestapo behind, the family settles near Kerstin's reluctant sister. Lutz, a Hitler Youth member, knocks Leyna to the ground with his bicycle and injures her; she ignores him at first. After she is kicked out of school, Leyna goes with her mother to work at a factory, where Lutz rides past her every day. Lutz's father is a high-ranking SS officer, and Lutz finds it hard to follow the path set for him. Koen is forced into the Hitler Youth and turns against his sister. Lutz and Leyna begin meeting in secret.
