Plot summary
Phoebe O'Connor is a teenager in 1976 San Francisco, troubled by the death of her older sister, Faith, who was found at the base of a cliff in Portugal and whose death was ruled a suicide. Phoebe doubts that ruling. Her mother, Gail, opposes the trip, but Phoebe travels to Europe to piece together how Faith spent her final year. In Amsterdam she finds Wolf, an Englishman who had gone to Europe with Faith, and he says that drugs, thrill-seeking and a hedonistic life lay behind her sister's death. When a vision of Faith appears to her in the street, Phoebe accepts Wolf's offer to stay with him and his wife, Claire. She begins planning a journey to Portugal, to see where Faith last lived.
