Edward Hardwicke

Biography

Edward Hardwicke was an English stage and screen actor. The son of the actors Helena Pickard and Cedric Hardwicke, he was born in London and made his first film appearance in Hollywood at the age of ten in Victor Fleming's A Guy Named Joe. After attending the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and training as an actor, he acted at the Bristol Old Vic, then the Oxford Playhouse, and later the Nottingham Playhouse before joining Laurence Olivier's National Theatre in 1964 and staying for seven years, appearing in Othello and The Master Builder. On television he became known as Pat Grant in Colditz from 1972 to 1973, and he was best known as Dr. Watson in Granada Television's Sherlock Holmes, alongside Jeremy Brett, from 1986 to 1994. His films included Shadowlands (1993) and Richard III (1995).
