Plot summary
A former boxer, Reggie Kray has made himself part of London's criminal underground in the 1960s, while his twin brother Ron is held in a psychiatric hospital, where he is treated for paranoid schizophrenia. Reggie threatens his way to Ron's early release, and together the twins move to take control of much of the city's underworld. That is made easier when the leader of the south London Richardson Gang is jailed. One of their first moves is to seize a local nightclub. Reggie also begins a relationship with Frances, the sister of his driver, while Detective Leonard "Nipper" Read leads the investigation into the brothers.

- Tom Hardy was so set on playing the gangster Ronnie Kray that he proposed a deal to director Brian Helgeland: give him the part of Ronnie and he would play Ronnie's twin brother Reggie for free.
- A promotional poster for the film attracted publicity because it made a two-star review from The Guardian appear to be at least a four-star review, by placing the two stars between the heads of the Kray twins.
- While researching the Krays in London, director Brian Helgeland drank with their associate Freddie Foreman, who was celebrated at the bar as he left; asked about the bill, Foreman replied, "we don't pay."
