Plot summary
Sonia Horowitz lives in Brooklyn, where she has just given birth to a first child and is married in an arranged match to Mendel, a Hasidic scholar buried in his studies. After a panic attack she makes a pass at her sister-in-law Rachel. The Rebbe hears her trouble, but she can only speak of a fire burning inside her. She sees and hears her younger brother, who died at ten. When Mendel forgets her birthday, she tells him she wants something beautiful in her life. Her brother-in-law Sender gives her work as a buyer in his jewelry business, and a ring she finds leads her to Ramon, a Puerto Rican designer who works in the jewelry quarter and hides his own artistry.
