Plot summary
A ferry fire in New York City in 1914 leaves hundreds of passengers dead, most of them women who could not swim. Their mother, Gertrude Ederle, resolves that Meg and Henry Jr. will learn to survive in the water, while Trudy, ill with measles, stays out of it. Trudy recovers and becomes fascinated with swimming. At twelve, having persuaded her stern father Henry, she begins the sport, and the children join the Women's Swimming Association under Charlotte Epstein, who favors Meg. Epstein also agrees to train Trudy, whose times improve until she sets a string of world records, while her sister's progress is more modest.

The real Gertrude "Trudy" Ederle set a world record for crossing the English Channel of 14 hours and 31 minutes, two hours faster than the men's record. She later lost her hearing and taught deaf children to swim, and died in 2003 at the age of 98.
