Plot summary
Held back by his working-class background, Jude Fawley works as a stonemason in Victorian England while dreaming of a university education. Circumstances push him into an unhappy marriage with Arabella, a country girl, who soon leaves him. After her departure he moves to Christminster, believing that hard work alone can open the university to any man. The university rejects him, largely because of his low social standing. There he meets his cousin Sue Bridehead, an intelligent woman who shares his scorn for convention. Jude falls in love with her, and she with him, but he tells her he is still married to Arabella, and she is deeply hurt.
