Plot summary
Bill Carey, a New York playboy, is cruising the Orient as the guest of his girlfriend, the heiress Dolly Harrison, and her family. In Saigon he meets Manon DeVargnes, a woman of mixed French and local parentage who moves through a society that refuses her the standing of its white residents. The French government denies passports to people like her, so the Paris she longs for stays out of reach. Pierre Delaroch, who owns the Saigon Rubber Company, keeps her as his companion, and a local king is another match pressed on her. Manon prefers Bill, and the two spend a day together. Bill wants to marry her and take her home to the United States.
