Plot summary
Barney Glasgow is a ruthless lumberjack foreman in late 19th-century Wisconsin. He wants to become the head of the logging industry and will stop at nothing to reach that goal. His determination leads him to break off his romance with saloon singer Lotta Morgan. He marries Emma Louise, the daughter of his boss Jed Hewitt, to secure a partnership in the business.

- While producer Samuel Goldwyn was kept away from the studio by two major surgeries, director Howard Hawks let writer Jules Furthman change the tone of Edna Ferber's story, cast the slender Walter Brennan as Swan Bostrom, a man Ferber had called "the strongest man in the North woods", and set a shooting schedule and budget Goldwyn never would have approved.
- Samuel Goldwyn fired Howard Hawks from Come and Get It when the director refused his demands for major changes; the character Richard Glasgow, intended as the second lead, had barely been in the rough cut.
- William Wyler was summoned to Samuel Goldwyn's home and told he would be finishing Come and Get It while still working on Dodsworth; loath to take over another director's film, he accepted only because Goldwyn threatened him with suspension.
- Wyler shot roughly the final third of Come and Get It in two weeks and wanted his name kept off it, relenting only when Goldwyn agreed to give Hawks top billing; he disowned the film and never counted it in his filmography.
- Goldwyn announced Miriam Hopkins for the dual roles of Lotta Morgan and Lotta Bostrom, but Hawks was unhappy with her; after looking at screen tests he chose Andrea Leeds, then replaced her with the even less experienced Frances Farmer and gave Leeds the supporting role of Evvie Glasgow instead.
- Goldwyn tried to borrow Spencer Tracy from MGM to play Barney Glasgow, but Louis B. Mayer refused to let him work for his chief rival, so contract player Edward Arnold was given the part.
- Walter Brennan became the first recipient of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, for playing Swan Bostrom.
