Plot summary
Max Eisenstein and Martin Schulz are German expatriate art dealers and friends who live in the United States, and Martin's son Heinrich is in love with Max's daughter Griselle. Martin and his wife Elsa go back to Germany to look for artwork, and Griselle travels with them to seek acting work. There Martin meets Baron von Friesche, joins the Nazi Party and rises to an important post in the government. He tells Max, who is a Jew, to stop writing to him. Max sends a hand-delivered letter to check whether Martin writes under pressure, and Martin replies that the friendship is over. In Vienna Griselle acts under the name Stone, and she is cast in a play in Berlin.
