Plot summary
Tom Craig, a Boston pharmacist, travels to California during the Gold Rush and waits in San Francisco for a river boat to Sacramento. Saloon regulars mock his eastern clothes and courteous manner, then gape when he orders milk and bends a coin with one hand. He relieves the toothache of Kegs McKeever, who boards the boat with him. Tom carries the singer Lacey Miller over a mud puddle, angering her fiancé, political boss Britt Dawson, who strikes him. Dawson presses Mr. Carlin to sell ranch land cheaply and shoots him in the hand; Tom dresses the wound and calls Dawson's account false, so Dawson has him thrown overboard. In Sacramento no one will rent Tom a store until Lacey takes him as a partner. Ellen Sanford meets Tom, and they begin courting.
