Plot summary
Merlin Jones is a student at Midvale College who fills his free time with experiments on the mind. His latest project is a helmet connected to a tape that records mental activity. Wearing it behind the wheel of a car brings him before Judge Holmsby, who suspends his driver's license. Back in the lab, Merlin finds that the invention lets him hear the thoughts of people around him. Merlin also holds a part-time job at a diner, and when the judge stops in there, Merlin picks up thoughts of a crime. The local police treat his report as the work of a crackpot.

- The film's credited writers, Tom and Helen August, were pseudonyms for the married screenwriters Alfred Lewis Levitt and Helen Levitt, who had been blacklisted in Hollywood.
- The Misadventures of Merlin Jones was made as a two-part production for the 1963-64 season of NBC's Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, but the network, pleased with Annette Funicello's performance, asked Disney for two more films with her character and it went to theaters instead of television.
