Plot summary
Gerald Boyer works as an obstetrician in Manhattan, and he and his wife Beverly live in the suburbs. Mrs. Fraleigh, one of Gerald's patients, invites the Boyers to her home for dinner, where they meet her father-in-law, Tom Fraleigh, the owner of the Happy Soap company. Beverly entertains the table with a story about how Happy Soap saved her life. Tom is unhappy with his current television commercial and, taken with her enthusiasm, asks her to tell that story in a live spot during a television play. Beverly is nervous and makes a fool of herself, yet viewers and critics praise her natural charm. The advertising executive Mike Palmer tells her that Tom has offered a one-year $80,000 contract to star in weekly Happy Soap commercials, and Gerald resents the busy schedule that keeps her away from home.
