Plot summary
Mary Adams is a waitress at a waterfront bar owned by a man who once swindled her father. One night she climbs through his bedroom window and takes $25,000 from under his pillow. When the police arrive the next morning, she confesses to the theft to escape both pursuit and the bar owner's anger. The money is not recovered, and she is sentenced to five years, earning early release for good behavior. Out on parole, she takes another waterfront waitressing job, this one for Dragomie Damitrof, and believes the authorities are still watching her for the missing money. She trusts no one. She meets Johnny, a fisherman.
