Paul Hartman

Biography

Paul Hartman was an American dancer and actor who worked across vaudeville, Broadway, television and film. Born in San Francisco into a theatrical family, he was dancing on stage by the age of four, alongside his sister. He formed a vaudeville dance partnership in 1922, and his Broadway debut came with Ballyhoo of 1932, followed by a role in Cole Porter's Red Hot and Blue. Their 1948 revue Angel in the Wings brought him a Tony Award as best lead actor in a musical. He starred in the NBC sitcom The Hartmans (at Home) and played Albie Morrison on The Pride of the Family. In later years he took character parts, among them Emmett Clark, the handyman on The Andy Griffith Show and on Mayberry R.F.D., and he appeared in Inherit the Wind (1960) and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1967). He died in 1973.
