Plot summary
Harry Bannerman is a public relations specialist in Putnam's Landing, a commuter town in Connecticut. His wife Grace attends every civic committee meeting in town. When the government picks Putnam's Landing for a new missile base, Grace joins a committee that wants to stop it, and her campaign causes trouble for Harry. Harry is given the job of liaison for the military. Angela Hoffa also works to get Harry for herself.

- Screenwriter George Axelrod invented a narrator named Max to weave Max Shulman's novel into a film, a throwback to the old Pete Smith comedy shorts, but the studio hated the idea of narration and threw it out, so he spent a long time getting his name off the picture.
- The part of Angela was first intended for Jayne Mansfield, but after intense lobbying by Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward, Joan Collins was given the role; Collins and Mansfield had co-starred in The Wayward Bus.
- Captain Hoxie was originally going to be played by Paul Douglas, but Jack Carson took over the role after Douglas fell ill, according to a July 1958 The Hollywood Reporter item.
