Plot summary

Gillian Tanner is a celebrated romance novelist who walks out on her boyfriend Alan after she learns he has been cheating. Her friend Charlene persuades her to buy a Companion Model G-45, a lifelike android whose personality runs on artificial intelligence. Gillian picks the cooking and basic first aid packages, skips the sports add-ons, and names him Geoffrey. She likes how good he looks. She brings him to her mountain cabin to write her next novel. His endlessly identical, formal replies irritate her, so she reprograms him herself, making his personality informal and his vocabulary slang. She likes the result and feels increasingly drawn to him.
