Plot summary
In the late 21st century, the human Bilateral Terran Alliance is at war with the Dracs, a reptilian species, and both sides claim colony worlds across the galaxy. During a space battle, Willis E. Davidge, a human fighter pilot, and Jeriba Shigan, a Drac pilot, engage in a dogfight. Both are shot down and crash on Fyrine IV, a volcanic planet with a harsh, largely barren surface. Each survives the crash. At first the two stalk one another across the terrain. Then they put aside their hatred and cooperate in order to stay alive. Across three years they become friends, and each one saves the other's life more than once.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Enemy Mine (1985)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Enemy Mine began shooting in April 1984 with Richard Loncraine directing on an $18 million budget, but after three weeks of filming in Iceland and Budapest the producers grew concerned about budget overruns, creative differences and poor-quality dailies.
- Petersen did not like any of Loncraine's footage, saying Lou Gossett Jr. looked like a man in a rubber lizard suit and Iceland looked like Iceland; he opted to start anew and moved the production from Budapest to Munich, to the studio he had used for Das Boot.
- Originally budgeted at $17 million, the film ultimately cost more than $40 million once marketing was factored in and earned only a little over $12 million during the 1985 holiday season.
- Enemy Mine was a success in the Soviet Union, where it became the first Western science-fiction film shown in theaters.
- Fox pushed the film with a blitz the Sunday before Thanksgiving: full-page advertisements in 43 of the largest American newspapers, virtually simultaneous prime-time commercials on all three networks, 3,500 theatrical trailers shipped to cinemas and posters covering 164 of the nation's biggest shopping malls.
- In the United Kingdom the original 108-minute film was cut to 93 minutes for its theatrical release and later on VHS, and the full-length version was not reinstated until the 2002 DVD.
