Plot summary

In July 1993, San Diego businessman Jack Powell drives home and pulls over at a roadside crime scene. A sheriff tells him a dismembered body was found in the trunk of a Chrysler, warns him not to stop or make new friends, and an officer slams the trunk shut on the name Hatchet Man etched across it. Jack passes a hitchhiker without stopping, then finds the same man at a diner, where he introduces himself as Adrian. Waitress Patsy describes a briefcase holding $1.25 million in mob money stolen from a Las Vegas casino. Adrian claims he can read anyone in two minutes, then asks Jack what his briefcase holds. Jack slips away, hearing a radio report about the theft and a string of dismemberment murders, until a roadblock for a chemical spill forces him back to a motel.
