Plot summary
The Ice Man is a drug kingpin whom San Francisco police inspector Jack Cates has chased for four years without identifying him. At a raceway called Hunter's Point, Jack confronts Tyrone Burroughs and Arthur Brock; Jack shoots Brock in self-defense, Burroughs escapes, and Brock's weapon cannot be found. Lt. Blake Wilson of Internal Affairs, who does not believe the Ice Man exists, moves to prosecute Jack for manslaughter. Near the raceway Jack finds a photograph showing that the Ice Man has ordered Reggie Hammond killed; Reggie leaves prison the following day. Reggie demands the $500,000 Jack has been holding for him, and Jack will not release the money unless Reggie helps him find the Ice Man and clear his name.

- Eddie Murphy was paid $200,000 for his role in the original 48 Hrs., but by the time of Another 48 Hrs. his fee was $12 million up front plus a percentage of the gross.
- Another 48 Hrs. began as a 145-minute workprint, was cut to 120 minutes, and a week before its summer release Paramount removed 25 more minutes, leaving a 95-minute theatrical version full of plot holes and continuity mistakes.
- Paramount cut Frank McRae's reprisal of his role from the original 48 Hrs. down to a brief, uncredited background shot in one police-station scene, and also removed a scene of Jack Cates explaining his deadline, so the phrase '48 hours' is never spoken in the finished film.
- Eddie Murphy accused Paramount of not spending enough on advertising and of changing the release date; Paramount countered that Murphy did not spend enough time promoting the film, straining their long-running relationship.
