Plot summary
J.P. Whittier is an obsessive collector of bird eggs. His target is a clutch laid by a bald eagle of a kind new to science, high on the private island owned by Jim Malden, a Vietnam veteran who keeps to himself. Whittier engages Mike Walker, a mountaineer, to pass himself off as a photographer and win Malden's trust so that the nest can be reached. Stella Clayton runs the local store; Malden cannot bring himself to tell her what he feels for her or for her son Adam. Some hunters who were caught on Malden's island without permission are looking for payback.

- After shooting on A Breed Apart finished, the reels were flown back to Los Angeles but one of the four never arrived, so the film was substantially reorganized in editing around the missing scenes. This partly explains why some sub-plots are incomplete and why Rutger Hauer's Jim Malden has no back story.
- When A Breed Apart was made, its subject, the bald eagle, was on the brink of extirpation in the continental United States. The bird now has a stable population and was removed from the federal government's list of endangered species in June 2007.
