Big break
While in Los Angeles waiting to collect a Tony for Sweet Charity, Neuwirth auditioned for Dr. Lilith Sternin on Cheers, a part planned for one episode that writers expanded into a recurring role.
Early training
Neuwirth trained at the Juilliard School for dance but left after a single year, finding the creative environment stifling and the training short on Broadway-style dance.
First role
Neuwirth studied acting for two years with Suzanne Shepard before making her Broadway debut as Sheila Bryant in A Chorus Line in 1980.
Early training
Neuwirth left Juilliard in 1977 and right away studied singing and jazz at a YWCA in New York City. Joan Morton Lucas, who appeared in Singin' in the Rain, taught one of those classes.
A first
In 1996 Neuwirth starred in an ABC pilot called Dear Diary that was not picked up. After a slight edit it played one weekend in a single theater, and it is one of just two TV pilots ever nominated for an Oscar, and the only winner.
