Plot summary
New students arrive at the High School of Performing Arts in New York to train in dance, music and drama. In dance class, Ms. Kraft is worried about Kevin Barrett's dancing and impressed by Alice Ellerton. Jenny Garrison finds it hard to let loose in acting class, Mr. Cranston gives Victor Taveras pointers in music class, and Denise Dupree plays the piano music perfectly. In the lunchroom the students practice their majors and dance. Denise tells Malik Washburn that her conservative parents think the school is a place where people sit around practicing the cello, and Malik says his mother, who works three jobs, does not know he attends the school.

- Debbie Allen, who plays principal Angela Simms in the 2009 remake, is the only person to appear in the 1980 original film, its television series and this version; in the film and series she played dance teacher Lydia Grant.
- The film's setting draws on real New York schools: Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia founded the High School of Music & Art in 1936 for gifted public school students, and the School of Performing Arts followed in 1948.
- A version of the title song with a verse by Collins Pennie, who plays Malik, was left off the soundtrack album, but appeared on The Radio Mixes EP and got a music video to promote the film.
