Plot summary

Sophie Birenbaum, sixteen, is surprised to land a leading part in her high school musical, Waitress. Her best friend Carolyn promises to back her, then begins behaving strangely, and Sophie starts to feel shut out. Elizabeth takes her daughter to the mall to try a southern accent on the salespeople, and afterward tells Sophie she was chosen well. Elizabeth and her husband Ted then hear that the cancer is advancing faster than they expected. Elizabeth refuses to tell Sophie yet, because she does not want her to drop out of the show. Rehearsals go on, and Sophie learns that her character is written to kiss Jack, the boy she likes.
