Plot summary
In 1969, Alan Parrish digs up the board game Jumanji at a construction site in Brantford, New Hampshire and takes it home. That night he plays with his friend Sarah Whittle, and a roll of the dice pulls him into the jungle inside the game. Twenty-six years on, Judy and Peter Shepherd come to live in the empty Parrish house with their aunt Nora, and in the attic they find the game. Starting to play, they summon giant mosquitoes, a troop of monkeys and a lion, and an adult Alan steps out of the board. Since the rules promise that everything the game brings will be undone once it is finished, Alan and the children need Sarah to take her turns with them.

- TriStar would only finance Jumanji if Robin Williams took the lead, and Williams had already turned the first script down. He agreed only after director Joe Johnston and writers Jonathan Hensleigh, Greg Taylor and Jim Strain rewrote it extensively.
- Joe Johnston worried that Robin Williams would improvise his way off the page. Williams stuck to the script, and the crew shot duplicate versions of scenes in which he was free to improvise with Bonnie Hunt.
- Industrial Light & Magic built two new pieces of software for Jumanji: iSculpt, for realistic facial expressions on the computer-generated animals, and a program that created convincing digital hair for the first time, used on the monkeys and the lion.
- Bradley Pierce, who plays Peter as he turns into a monkey, sat through three and a half hours of prosthetic make-up every day for two and a half months.
- Chris Van Allsburg, who wrote the 1981 picture book, said the studio came close to dropping the project altogether until his own film treatment added enough story beyond the book to keep it alive, earning him a story credit.
