Plot summary
Oscar Grubman, fifteen, comes home to his father's apartment for the Thanksgiving holiday. He reads Voltaire, speaks French, and has no patience for girls his own age; when Miranda Spear, a classmate, shows interest, he turns her away. He tells his friend Charlie that he means to win the heart of a mature woman over the break. His father Stanley teaches history at Columbia, and his stepmother is Eve, a cardiologist. At a family gathering Stanley presents Oscar to a girl his own age, and Oscar ignores her while watching Eve, who reads his attention as nothing more than friendliness. Discouraged, Oscar takes a fake ID to a bar and drinks too much.
