Plot summary
Andie Anderson writes the how-to column for Composure, a women's magazine in New York, and would rather take on serious reporting. After her friend Michelle goes through another breakup, Andie proposes a piece about the familiar ways women push men away, and she will test it on a real boyfriend over ten days. Benjamin Barry works in advertising and wants to lead a campaign for a diamond company; his boss Phillip Warren doubts he can pitch to women. In a bar, Ben wagers that he can win a woman's love inside ten days, and Phillip promises him the campaign if he manages it by the company ball. Ben's rivals Spears and Green, who know of Andie's plan, select her as the target of the bet.

- Gwyneth Paltrow and director Mike Newell were originally attached to the project, but producer Lynda Obst was unable to get Newell to commit to a date and Paltrow went on to work on the film View from the Top.
- The yellow gown Kate Hudson wore was created by Carolina Herrera with the film's costume designer, and the necklace she wears with it, called the "Isadora Diamond" after Isadora Duncan, holds an 80-carat yellow diamond designed by Harry Winston and worth $6 million.
- The apartment interiors were conceived by Yeadon-born sculptor Zoë Waterman, who wanted the characters to live in what she called dream spaces. She asked herself where she would absolutely love to live in her wildest dreams, and the whole design came together in about fifteen minutes.
