Biography
Jon Stewart is an American comedian, writer, producer, director, and television host who started in stand-up comedy before moving into television. Born in New York City, he first hosted Comedy Central's Short Attention Span Theater, then MTV's You Wrote It, You Watch It and The Jon Stewart Show. In 1999 he took over The Daily Show, hosting until 2015 and returning part-time in 2024. He also hosted the Apple TV+ series The Problem with Jon Stewart between 2021 and 2023. His film work includes Mixed Nuts, Playing by Heart, Wishful Thinking, Big Daddy (1999), The Faculty, Since You've Been Gone, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Death to Smoochy (2002), and Doogal (2006), where he voiced a villain. He hosted George Carlin: 40 Years of Comedy and the Sesame Street special Elmopalooza. His accolades include Primetime Emmy, Grammy, and Peabody Awards.

Stewart went back to New York City in 1986 to work in comedy, but lacked the nerve to perform until the next year, when he first did stand-up at The Bitter End, a club where Woody Allen also started.

Stewart was considered to take over NBC's Late Night when David Letterman left, but the job went to the then relatively unknown Conan O'Brien.

Stewart made his film debut with a small role in Mixed Nuts, which flopped at the box office. He also got a minor part in The First Wives Club, though his scene was cut.
