Plot summary
The Kurtzmans are a Jewish family in Forest Park, a suburb of northwest Baltimore, in the fall of 1954. Nate runs a burlesque theater and a numbers racket, and Ada keeps the home. Their older son Van attends the University of Baltimore; Ben, the younger, is a high school senior. When his school district is integrated, Ben meets Sylvia, an African-American classmate. Ada disapproves, but Ben and Sylvia grow close, drawn together by jazz, James Brown and black comedians. Sylvia's father, an affluent doctor, also objects and forbids them to see each other.

- Liberty Heights was the last screen appearance of Ralph Tabakin, who had taken a cameo role in every Barry Levinson film since the director's first, Diner. Tabakin died in 2001, two years after the film came out.
