Biography

Anthony Edwards, an American performer who also directs and produces, was born in Santa Barbara, California, and took theater courses at the University of Southern California. His early films included Revenge of the Nerds (1984) and The Sure Thing (1985). Top Gun (1986) brought his first widespread public recognition. He went on to appear in Miracle Mile (1988), Downtown (1990), and The Client (1994), and had a recurring role on Northern Exposure from 1992 to 1993. His best-known part is Dr. Mark Greene on ER, which he played from 1994 to 2002 and which gave him his first chance to direct. For ER he received four Primetime Emmy nominations and won a Golden Globe and six Screen Actors Guild Awards. Later film work includes Thunderbirds (2004), Zodiac (2007), and Planes (2013), where he voiced a fighter jet. He was also in Designated Survivor and Inventing Anna, and made his Broadway debut in 2018 in Children of a Lesser God.
