Plot summary
Jeff Tracy, a widowed former astronaut, leads International Rescue from Tracy Island in the South Pacific, a secret organization that saves lives with advanced machines called Thunderbirds. Alan, the youngest of his sons, is a boarder at Wharton Academy in Massachusetts, where his closest friend is Fermat, and he dreams of flying one of the machines himself. Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward and her valet Parker bring Alan and Fermat to the island for spring break, and Alan is grounded after trying to launch Thunderbird 1 without activating its anti-detection shield. A beacon planted on that craft during an oil rig rescue has led the Hood, a psychic criminal, to the island.

- Series creator Gerry Anderson was invited to act as creative consultant but was left out when the studio felt it already had enough people on the payroll acting as part of the creative team; the studio then offered him $750,000 to attend the premiere, which he could not accept from people he had not worked for.
- Thunderbirds is dedicated to the memory of Stephen Lowen, a rigger on the film, who died in a fall while dismantling one of the sets.
- A 60-foot model of Thunderbird 3, created by ZenithOptimedia to market the film, stood in Trafalgar Square around the release, was later displayed in Blackpool - at one point decorated with images from Pablo Picasso's Guernica - and was bought in 2008 by Eastern Airways, which still displays it at Humberside Airport.
