Plot summary
Jessica Kailo is a popular, talented senior and class president at her Michigan high school. Her family is devoted to the University of Michigan, and she wants to escape that expectation and her school image by getting into Ramsey College in Pennsylvania. Marlon Browne, an unnoticed underachiever in her class, is in love with her and wants to follow her to college. At Ramsey, administrator Leo Whitman holds that SAT scores alone should decide admissions, while Kip Hammett and Nina Sachie, alumni now working in admissions, argue that scores are not the only measure of an applicant. Marlon's best friend Oliver has no interest in college. Two Detroit seniors, one a leader whose father died when she was young, the other a talented football player whose wish for a broader education goes ignored.
