Plot summary
At the La Brea Tar Pits, Julie Peters and Harry Washello meet and agree to see each other again at midnight in the Miracle Mile, but a power failure stops Harry's alarm. He wakes hours later, rushes to Julie's workplace, and leaves an apology on her answering machine. Then the payphone rings: a man named Chip, dialing the wrong area code, warns that nuclear war will begin in less than 70 minutes, asks Harry to call his father, and is cut off. A second voice tells Harry to forget the call. In the diner, the customers mock his story until Landa, a businesswoman, telephones Washington and confirms that officials are leaving for the Southern Hemisphere, then charters jets to Antarctica. Harry, unwilling to go without Julie, jumps from the departing van to find her.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Miracle Mile (1988)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Steve De Jarnatt's script was famous in Hollywood for a decade before it was filmed, and American Film magazine named it one of the ten best unmade screenplays of 1983; Warner Brothers would not trust a first-time director with it.
- De Jarnatt bought his own script back for 25,000 dollars, then turned down 400,000 dollars from the studio to sell it again, holding out until he could direct it himself.
- The script nearly became Twilight Zone: The Movie, and production almost began with Nicolas Cage and Kurt Russell before Anthony Edwards took the lead; other studios balked at mixing romance with nuclear war.
- Anthony Edwards recalled that everyone who wanted the script wanted a happy ending instead, and De Jarnatt held out so long that Edwards grew old enough to play the part.
