Plot summary
Alex Kearney is a patrolman on a comfortable beat in Bryn Mawr, an affluent suburb of Philadelphia, and he works strictly by the rules. He stops a well-connected executive, and when the department does not accept his version of what happened, he is sent to Downtown, the precinct the city considers its most dangerous and crime-ridden. The officers at the precinct figure the pampered suburban cop will get himself and whoever partners with him killed. Sergeant Dennis Curren, a veteran there, draws the job of keeping the new man out of trouble. The two men get off to a tense start.
