Plot summary
In Greenwich Village, Eliza Welsh raises Clara and Lucas, keeps a blog about her days, and has put the fiction she used to write aside. Her husband, Avery, is good-natured and absent-minded, and tuned out to the domestic reality around him; her best friend, Sheila, understands her too well. On the morning of Clara's sixth birthday, Eliza's to-do list begins at dawn: a party to arrange, her toddler son to mind, and a parking space to battle for under alternate-side parking rules. She also means to enter a parenting magazine's contest, which asks for five hundred words on what motherhood means to her. She wants that essay published, and she wants to work outside the home again.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Motherhood's British premiere was confined to a single London cinema, the Apollo Piccadilly Circus, in March 2010. It took £9 on opening night and £88 over its opening weekend, with eleven tickets sold and just one person at the first showing.
- The Times reported that Motherhood was the second-worst flop in British cinematic history, beaten only by 2007's My Nikifor, which took £7 at launch and was a small independent effort rather than a £3m Hollywood production.
- Writer-director Katherine Dieckmann's real home, two rent-stabilized apartments on the same floor of a West Village building, one for bedrooms and the other holding the kitchen, office and living room, inspired the film. Uma Thurman's character lives in literally the same building, in a bisected apartment.
