Plot summary
At UCLA, Jonathan Moore is an 18-year-old veterinary student and the reigning champion of Gotcha, a campus game in which students stalk one another with paintball guns. For spring break he and his roommate Manolo fly to Paris. In a café there he meets Sasha Banicek, a Czechoslovak woman of 24, and loses his virginity to her. He gives up the trip to Spain he had planned with Manolo and goes with her to West Berlin. She explains that she works as a courier and must cross into East Berlin to collect a package. She gives him a package holding a strudel and warns that if she ever sends him to the Café Friedrichstrasse, he should get out of East Berlin immediately.

- In November 1987 LJN published a Nintendo Entertainment System game, Gotcha! The Sport!, developed by Atlus for the Zapper light gun, which adapts the paintball tournament from the film's opening and drops the spy-comedy plot, promoting LJN's Entertech guns.
- Songs heard in the film but left off the MCA soundtrack album include "Two Tribes" and "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
- In 2020 Intrada Records released a limited edition album of Bill Conti's 28-minute-long score, two tracks of which were on the 1985 soundtrack album, but none of the pop songs could be licensed for the release.
