Plot summary

Sophie Kessler waits tables in Iowa and raises her son Garrett in the home she shares with her diabetic mother, Kristin. In the summer Garrett starts vomiting in his sleep, and a doctor tells her nothing is wrong. A rash follows, and a pediatrician, a dermatologist and a psychologist all fail to identify it. Sophie begins to suspect that genetically modified organisms may lie behind her son's illness. At the university laboratory where Kristin works as a secretary, she meets the scientist Serge Negani and asks him about her worries. A man named Peter Landell overhears her, claims to be a university scientist, and tells her about files that he says hold answers.
