Plot summary
Billy Ray Smith, a timid young teacher from Boston, lives in a rugged Texas town, where his teenage student Nettie Tuleen has a crush on him. While he reads the class a story by his favorite author, Kid Durango, a band of raiders led by El Diablo rides in and carries Nettie off. Billy Ray grabs one of the outlaw's heirloom spurs. He vows to rescue her, though he can neither ride a horse nor shoot a gun. In Millennium he seeks a sheriff who once rode with Kid Durango, and meets Thomas Van Leek, an aging gunslinger who offers to help him, then calls him a fool and walks off. Van Leek returns to save him from bounty hunters and starts gathering men for the chase, the spur serving as a calling card.
