Plot summary
A dam is under construction in the mountains above Northfork, Montana, and the valley will be submerged when it is finished. The residents are being moved to higher ground; most have gone already, but a few remain. A committee of six men is working to relocate them. Walter O'Brien and his son are on that team, and the government has promised them land by the lake if enough people are moved out. Father Harlan has stayed behind to look after Irwin, an eight-year-old orphan too ill to travel, who drifts between sleep and death. In his dreams Irwin meets a band of lost angels searching for a way home.
