Plot summary
In the early 1930s, Lewis Tater, an Iowa farmer, wants to write Western fiction like his idol Zane Grey. He signs up for a correspondence course from the University of Titan in Nevada, then decides to study on campus and see the real West for himself. The train leaves him at a lonely whistle stop, where the ticket agent tells him no university exists: the school amounts to a few post office boxes that two con men check each week. Lewis takes a room at their hotel anyway, fights off a nighttime intruder, and flees in the con men's car. When it runs out of gas in the desert, he takes his suitcase and a second case from the boot. The con men find their case gone and set out after him.
