Biography

Steve Railsback is an American actor who built a career on odd, often unsettling parts, starting out in New York theater after growing up in Wichita Falls, Texas. He studied at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg, appeared in stage works such as The Bluebird and Orpheus Descending, and caught the attention of Elia Kazan, who gave him his first film role, in The Visitors (1972). His breakthrough came with the miniseries Helter Skelter (1976), in which he played Charles Manson, and he went on to star as a fugitive in The Stunt Man (1980) alongside Peter O'Toole and in the science fiction horror film Lifeforce (1985). He also wrote, produced and directed the Vietnam story The Forgotten (1989), took another disturbed part in Ed Gein (2000), which he executive produced, and later appeared in Neo Ned (2005), King of the Lost World (2005) and Plaguers (2008).
