Plot summary
Detroit police investigate the robbery of $400,000 from a fund-raiser for Representative Aubrey Hale Clayton. Two detectives are put on the case: Lieutenant Danny Bassett, who is white and street-smart, and Sergeant Jesse Williams, who is Black and educated. Political pressure weighs on the department as the pair work the investigation. The title comes from the Detroit Police radio code 9000, which means officer down.

- Quentin Tarantino championed the film: his short-lived Rolling Thunder Pictures gave Detroit 9000 a limited theatrical re-release in October 1998, Miramax put it out on video in April 1999, and Tarantino slipped a line of its dialogue into the soundtrack of his own Jackie Brown.
- Unlike many films set in Detroit, such as RoboCop and Bird on a Wire, it was shot mostly on location in downtown Detroit and close-in neighborhoods, capturing landmarks since demolished, among them the J.L. Hudson Company and Fort Street Union Depot.
- The Book Cadillac Hotel hosted the reception scenes, including its famed crystal ballroom; the hotel closed in 1983, sat dormant for over 20 years, and was restored and reopened by the Westin Hotel group in 2009.
- The final shootout was staged in historic Elmwood Cemetery, and Sacred Heart Seminary doubled as the Longview Sanitarium where detective Bassett visits his institutionalized wife.
- The film refers to Detroit's July 1967 race rioting but deliberately kept away from areas of the city that still showed signs of heavy damage from those riots.
