Plot summary
Harry Miller leaves the U.S. Army in Germany and moves to Liverpool with his English wife Connie. He finds work as a lorry driver and soon meets criminals who steal from long-haul trucks. Lynn, the girlfriend of a crime figure, draws close to him. The gang blackmails Harry into joining their smuggling operation, even though he wants to remain honest.

- Mills's source novel was turned down by 12 publishers before the 13th accepted it, and even then he had to fight director and general editor Lovat Dickson to retain the book's more colorful passages.
- The film's source, Mervyn Mills's first novel, grew out of his moped journeys through early post-war Britain, where he absorbed the lives of long-distance lorry drivers and the people, often women, at their roadside cafes.
- Robert Mitchum was originally announced as the male star, but Victor Mature was signed for the part in January 1957.
- Setton tried to get Raymond Burr to play a supporting role alongside Victor Mature and Diana Dors, but was unable to secure him.
