Carole Landis
Biography
Carole Landis was an American actress who began her performing career as a dancer and band singer before moving to Hollywood in 1937. Signed by Warner Bros. in late 1936, she spent her early film years in low-budget B pictures, including four Torchy Blane comedies, and had uncredited bits in larger productions. After moving to Republic Pictures, she earned ingenue leads in westerns and the serial Daredevils of the Red Circle. Her breakthrough was the female lead in the prehistoric adventure One Million B.C. (1940), which led Hal Roach to sign her for further starring roles. At Twentieth Century-Fox she played opposite Betty Grable in Moon Over Miami and I Wake Up Screaming (1941), after which the studio assigned her lesser pictures. She entertained troops with the USO during World War II, starred on Broadway in the musical A Lady Says Yes in 1945, and wrote the 1944 book Four Jills in a Jeep.

Big break
D. W. Griffith had fifty actresses run to a post and back, and Landis was the only one who knew how to run. He said she had to run like an athlete, a deer, not like an average girl.
About the name
After bleaching her hair blonde, Landis took the screen name Carole Landis, honoring her favorite actress Carole Lombard and baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. She made the name legal on April 23, 1942.
A first
During World War II, Landis traveled over 100,000 miles entertaining servicemen. Among actresses, she gave the most time to this work, and in 1942 she served with the USO in England and North Africa.
Behind the camera
Landis wrote the 1944 book Four Jills in a Jeep about her wartime experiences, and it was later made into a movie with Kay Francis, Martha Raye and Mitzi Mayfair.
Beyond film
In 1945, Landis took a starring role on Broadway in A Lady Says Yes, a musical. Jacqueline Susann, later a novelist, appeared in a small part in that production.
