Plot summary
Martin Rome is a criminal recovering from serious wounds in a hospital prison ward after a shootout in which a police officer was killed. Detectives Candella and Collins come to question him about a jewel robbery and a murder for which someone else has already been convicted. Candella grew up with Rome in the same poor Italian-American neighborhood and holds him in contempt for his life of crime. A lawyer, W. A. Niles, visits Rome and tries to force him to admit to the robbery so that his own client can go free, and warns that Teena Ricante, Rome's girlfriend, will suffer if he refuses. Rome's family and Teena come to see him, and a priest arrives to give him last rites.
